Matthew Coulter

Associate

Matthew R. Coulter is an associate attorney at Smith, Hemmesch, Burke & Kaczynski, specializing in real estate taxation and transactions.

Originally from Woodridge, Illinois, Matt completed his undergraduate studies at Loyola University Chicago, where he earned a B.S. in Cybersecurity and with a minor in Computer Crime and Forensics in 2022. He later obtained his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in 2025, where he served as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Art, Technology, and Intellectual Property, and published an article titled, “Aiming for Fairness: an Exploration into Getty Images v. Stability AI and its Importance in the Landscape of Modern Copyright Law.”

During law school, Matt gained hands-on experience as a judicial extern in the Mortgage Foreclosure/Mechanics Lien Section of the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. In addition, Matt worked as a law clerk at SHBK, developing a solid background in property tax and real estate transactions.

Matt is an active member of the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association.
